How a hydrophilic swell bar seals a joint
The bar is bonded or fixed to the first concrete pour along the joint and cast in by the next pour. When water enters the joint, the hydrophilic polymer absorbs it and expands by 300–700% of its original volume, depending on the grade, pressing against the concrete and closing micro-voids and fine cracks. When the joint dries out, the bar shrinks back, and it swells again the next time water arrives, so the seal adapts to changing conditions over the life of the structure.
