The Rujewa Water Supply Project (Package 3), integrated into the Ifakara Water Supply Scheme in the Kilombero District of the Morogoro Region, Tanzania, is a crucial public utility infrastructure project. Commissioned under the oversight of the Ministry of Water and the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), this multi-million dollar venture aims to scale water service coverage and alleviate severe drinking water scarcity. The scope of work involves constructing massive raw water intake structures, heavy-duty water treatment plants, reinforced concrete storage reservoirs, and extensive distribution pipelines.
To protect the structural integrity of these heavy fluid-retaining concrete bodies against persistent moisture ingress, specialized PVC Waterstoppers manufactured by Maruti Techno Rubber are strategically integrated into the construction joints.
Challenges
Hydrostatic Pressure and Water Leaks: Fluid-retaining structures like storage tanks, reservoirs, and sedimentation basins encounter continuous internal hydrostatic pressure. Any slight discontinuity or vulnerability in the concrete construction joints will cause persistent leaking or major structural failure.
Aggressive Ground Conditions: Subterranean installations and wet well environments in the Kilombero valley are exposed to shifting ground tables and variable soil moisture. Unprotected joints can allow external contaminants, muddy groundwater, or minerals to seep into clean water channels.
Thermal Expansion & Setting Shrinkage: The mass concrete pours required for major water containment structures generate immense hydration heat. As the concrete dries and shifts through seasonal temperature changes, substantial contraction and expansion occur at the structural joints, risking random fractures if the joints are not completely flexible and sealed.
Solution
Dynamic Joint Sealing: Heavy-duty PVC Waterstoppers by Maruti Techno Rubber are cast directly into the concrete joints. Positioned across the construction and expansion interfaces, they form a continuous, interlocking physical barrier that stops fluid migration from either direction.
High Elasticity and Durability: Formulated from high-grade polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds, Maruti's waterstops provide excellent elongation properties. This flexibility allows the joints to absorb ongoing thermal movements and minor structural settling without puncturing or losing their watertight bond.
Long-Term Asset Integrity: By utilizing chemically inert and corrosion-resistant PVC profiles, the project minimizes maintenance vulnerabilities. The installation effectively seals the containment grid, preventing internal rebar corrosion and ensuring the clean water scheme achieves its decades-long service life for local communities.
