Maruti Rubber Group of Industries has successfully manufactured and supplied heavy-duty Tough Cell (Geocell) systems for the major Melur to Karaikudi Project in Sivagangai, Tamil Nadu. Procured through the KMC-JSR Joint Venture and executed on-site by JSR Infra Developers Private Limited, this critical highway corridor expansion improves regional connectivity. Maruti’s advanced 75mm height x 712mm weld spacing Tough Cells were deployed at the Sowmiyanarayanapuram zone to provide high-performance subgrade stabilization and load confinement over challenging soil profiles.
Challenge
The alignment through the Sivagangai region features pockets of weak, expansive clay and soft subgrade soils. Heavy commercial vehicle axle loads passing over these unreinforced soils can cause deep rutting, severe lateral displacement, and rapid asphalt pavement failure. As a primary highway link, the Melur to Karaikudi route must withstand a continuous volume of multi-axle cargo transport. Over time, high dynamic stress can cause differential settlement and reflective cracking up into the asphalt surface layer, leading to high maintenance costs.
Infrastructure works overseen by national highway joint ventures demand strict compliance with strict engineering material standards. The geocells had to demonstrate high seam peel strength, environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR), and long-term creep resistance under massive constant loads.
Solution
Maruti supplied its high-tensile Tough Cell [75 x 712] system. When expanded and filled with granular aggregate, these three-dimensional honeycomb structures provide robust lateral confinement. The cell walls prevent the aggregate from shifting sideways, creating a stiff composite mattress that acts like a semi-rigid slab to distribute heavy traffic loads over a much wider area. The 3D geometry of Maruti's Tough Cell significantly increases the modulus of the base layers. By increasing the soil's shear strength and distributing vertical stresses evenly, the geocell network reduces structural vertical deformation. This locks the structural base layers firmly in place, helping prevent pavement cracking and rutting.
Maruti manufactured the Tough Cells using premium, UV-stabilized high-density polyethylene (HDPE) alloys. Every batch delivered to the Sowmiyanarayanapuram site underwent rigorous quality control testing to verify precise 75mm height and 712mm weld spacing uniformity. We provided complete traceable material test certificates, ensuring immediate technical approval from project consultants.
